Problem to solve

Young people increasingly see themselves as brands, curating their professional identities for success. But job sites reduce individuals to resumés and numbers — making it difficult for people to stand out, and for businesses to identify talent that align with their values.

Bold idea

Transforming casual work by allowing people and places to craft and showcase their unique self — connecting staff and businesses whose personal brands align.

I wasn't really sure what to expect when I first started to work with the team at Nakatomi. I have to say though I would recommend this team to anyone wanting to move a project forward. The Nakatomi team really pushed us to understand our idea better - the ins. the outs, the reasons and the risks. The ideas that they have had and put in place to support us are wide, varied and insightful. I cannot thank and recommend the Nakatomi team enough.

How we got there

We identified the future of work.

The founders of Opus had a simple yet ambitious idea: to modernise the casual job market by connecting employees and employers with a single click. It was an audacious mission. But first, they needed to identify who would be the best fit for an instant job platform, and how to tailor the experience to meet their needs.

By 2030, Gen Z will make up a third of the Australian workforce, and they’re bringing a specific set of demands. While many business owners challenge their work ethic — often labelling them the most difficult generation — this mindset is here to stay.

In fact, they’re gradually shaping the future of the workplace; setting a new standard on a global scale.

Unlike their predecessors, Gen Z prioritises their own well-being, making sure they never compromise their boundaries for the sake of a corporation. Their loyalty is, above all, to their own happiness. This mindset has fuelled the rise of side hustle culture, with nearly half of them juggling side projects. They work shorter hours, put in far less overtime, and are less likely to rely on a primary full-time job as their main source of income.

If we were going to revolutionise the labor market, we needed to focus on helping an entire generation still trapped using platforms designed for the past, not the future.

Establishing our purpose through theirs.

At the very least, Gen Z expects certain standards from their workplace, like flexible hours, a focus on mental well-being, a healthy work environment, and autonomy. But what truly sets Gen Z apart from other generations are three key motivators: pay, progression, and purpose. While platforms like LinkedIn and Supp have addressed the first two — pay and progression — they’ve overlooked the third. This leaves a gap in the market for us to create a purpose-driven job board. One determined by their passion.

But we understood that creating a functional employment platform wasn’t enough; it needed to resonate with our audience’s core psychological need, which is the freedom to brand themselves in their own unique way.

In current job boards, people are reduced to their experiences (or lack thereof), while businesses are reduced to only presenting salaries and roles. Neither of them can fully showcase their personality, because nobody had dared to ask.

So we envisioned a new kind of employment platform; one that not only offered opportunities based on skill set and availability but also connected people and businesses whose brands align — matching passionate casual workers with interesting local businesses.

For individuals, this meant the ability to craft their professional persona and find flexible work. For businesses, it provided the chance to find immediate staff who could elevate their brand, not just fill a role.

Designing the brand, building the app, and launching the site.

Our first order of business was a name change. Opus became Peeple — a name that captures the spirit of the brand. We then created an identity that brought our essence to life, using bright colours and patterns unlike anything in our category. Because if we wanted to encourage our audience to be bold, we needed to be even bolder.

We also developed a driver-based financial model incorporating various subscription approaches. Peeple stands out not only in how it connects people and businesses, but also in making recruitment more cost-effective than ever before.

We built the app with imaginative features for people:

An in-depth character assessment that unveils a person’s professional persona, which is then classified into professional archetypes — each representing distinct personalities, traits, values, and attitudes.

The ability to upload images, videos, links, and prioritise their profile depending on their strengths and interests.

The freedom to schedule work by setting their availability for the week ahead.

Utilise a matching algorithm that quickly identifies roles that align with an individual’s persona and goals.

Live tracking to keep people updated on the application’s progress. If not matched with a role, Peeple will give helpful feedback on what to improve for next time — comparing it to the profiles that succeeded.

And for places:

A similar assessment evaluates the company’s personality, allowing the platform to match them with individuals who fit the vibe. Businesses are categorised into corporate archetypes that potential workers can explore.

Create posts that do more than just list the basics like role, date, time, and pay. Business can add ideal character traits and attitudes, so they can find the right person for the job.

Profile matches are displayed with a percentage score, helping businesses and individuals find their fit.
